PROJECT SHIFA
Overview
Project SHIFA (Support for Healing and Integration of Feelings, and Awareness) is a structured five-session mental health and psychosocial support programme for children. The programme focuses on building emotional literacy, psychological safety, and self-awareness through creative, child-friendly, and trauma-informed approaches, enabling children to understand and express their emotions in healthy ways. Project SHIFA is implemented in collaboration with local community stakeholders in Ghata Village, Gurugram, Haryana, with programme design and trauma-informed facilitation led by mental health professionals. These partnerships ensure community relevance, cultural sensitivity, and a supportive environment for children, while laying the groundwork for future expansion with caregivers, educators, and local institutions.
Rationale
Children in underserved communities often have limited access to safe spaces and age-appropriate support for emotional expression and mental well-being. Project SHIFA was developed to address this gap by introducing mental health concepts early, using art and storytelling as accessible tools. By fostering emotional awareness, coping skills, empathy, and self-worth, the programme aims to strengthen children’s resilience and lay a foundation for long-term well-being.
Progress So Far
The initial phase of Project SHIFA has been successfully implemented through five interactive sessions using therapeutic art activities, storytelling, emojis, coping tools, and affirmations. Sessions were conducted in familiar environments such as classrooms and outdoor spaces to ensure comfort and engagement. Children actively participated in creative exercises, reflected on their emotions, and showcased their work through a closing exhibition, reinforcing confidence and a sense of achievement.
